Cullen Swanson explains how consumers narrow their search results to a location or product by using long tail keywords. Understanding how this works as a content developer can help you increase traffic to your own blog or website.

When doing your keyword research to develop content for the internet, for your blog or website you should be mindful of what types of searches will be used and whether you are trying to go for a national result or a local search result says Cullen, local search will be a lot easier to rank for.

Cullen then demonstrates when it is better to use long tail or short tail keywords…

Short Tail keyword example- ‘internet marketing’ this is considered a very generic broad keyword.

Say a business owner was looking for a local intent marketing company to do business with, if he or she typed in a sort tail keyword this might pull in some local results. Google is smart and is going to pull the IP address or personalize their search results based on their search history etc… So the results might be a few local results mixed in with the overall national results.

If the business owner however wanted to find a local company, it would be better if they used long tail keywords that specify their needs… long tail keyword example – ‘Tulsa internet marketing firm’ this will result in local search results.

The definition: according to Cullen the short tail keywords are often one to two words in length sometimes three but not often. Long tail keywords are typically three to six words in length, they are sometimes referred to as a ‘search phrase’ and they are usually very specific.

So from a consumer standpoint you know how to search for products in your area by including the name of your city as Cullen showed in the example.

Cullen then looks at analytics to see which keywords have been used to find their website and content. It shows that people are using long tail keywords to find local traffic and from a consumers standpoint we understand that. However Cullen says that when you are writing content and you want that content to drive page one traffic to your website, what needs to be in front of your mind as a content developer or as a blogger is this… think long tail keywords, especially if you are trying to target local traffic.

Watch the video and hopefully this will help you understand better how to find the content you are after, but more importantly from a content development stand point it will help you drive more traffic to your website, if you understand how consumers are searching for the products and services you are offering on your website.
